Product Description
-How to Start a Career in Information Technology, 2nd edition- was three years in the making and is the culmination of my twenty years in the information technology field. Most of those years helping adult learners develop IT careers and skill sets. Despite what you may have read in the popular press IT careers are here to stay, but don't take my word for it. According to the U.S. Department of Labor in its November 2005 Monthly Labor Review shows that Information Technology and Healthcare jobs are the "Fastest growing occupations, 2004-2014". See the full report at: http://www.bls.gov/emp/emptab21.htm.As an instructor, I know firsthand the extent to which students are often uninformed (or worse yet misinformed) about the IT field and its associated careers. I know that many -would-be techies- embark on expensive training knowing little about where it will lead. Sadly, some working -techies- have spent years in the field only to realize that IT is not for them. Unfortunately, our educational system does little in the way of teaching career and life planning skills.

As a manager of career oriented training programs I know what it-s like when students come to me urgently needing help in selecting classes, or careers. Often the pressures of the job leave little time to address student-s personal needs adequately. Students and career changers want and need to know:

  • What are the starting salaries?
  • What areas of the IT field are growing?
  • What aptitudes are needed to succeed?
  • What kind of educational background is required?
  • What is the value of industry certification?
  • Where are the job opportunities?

2 out of 5 stars Tech Ed Book   April 25, 2007

This is a basic book. It appears to be a reissue of a 2004 book. The comments are from tech educators. The book encourages you to explore the field. I recommend Information Technology Jobs in America. Information Technology Jobs in America [2007] Corporate & Government Career Guide

1 out of 5 stars I was led astray by his blatant self promotion . . .   July 31, 2007

After encountering several "reviews" of other books on the topic, all of which were basically in the tone of "This book is OK but check out MY book." or "This book is OK but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MY book." (although, Ian never uses teh phrase "my book", opting, instead, to refer to himself in the third person in his "reviews"), I thought I would check out Ian's book . . . I am not impressed.
